What is Restylane®

Restylane® products are fillers made of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance naturally produced within your body that keeps your skin plump and hydrated. Restylane was the first hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved in the United States in 2003. These fillers are gel-like and soft and restore facial volume to lift the skin and reduce wrinkles caused by sagging tissue.

Numerous Restylane products are available, such as:

  • Restylane Silk, a small particle filler that reduces lines near or within your lips. It is FDA-approved for cannula injection into lips
  • Restylane Defyne, a smooth robust dermal filler that diminishes deep laugh and smile lines
  • Restylane Lyft, a larger particle filler that restores face, cheek, and hand volume. It is FDA-approved for cannula injection into the mid-face
  • Restylane Refyne, a smooth elastic filler that reduces mild-to-moderate laugh and smile lines
  • Restylane, a medium particle filler that reduces the appearance of facial folds and wrinkles. It is approved for use in lips
  • Practically all forms of Restylane can be used in the oral commissures and marionette region
  • In addition to the above FDA indications, these fillers are often used to treat and sculpt the face or target age-related changes that can affect your youthful appearance.

After a thorough consultation and examination to assess your anatomy and aesthetic goals, Dr. Lum helps you determine which Restylane filler best matches your needs.

What should I expect during Restylane treatment?

Before Dr. Lum injects Restylane fillers within and/or beneath your skin, he cleans the area and may apply a topical anesthetic. Dr. Lum uses fillers strategically to treat areas of your face, lips, cheeks, neck or hands to restore volume, treat indentations or concavities, and reduce signs of aging.

The procedure typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on what is being treated. After your injections, the most common side effects you might experience are:

  • Redness at injection sites
  • Mild swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness or skin irritation
  • Lumpiness
  • Lips tend to swell and bruise more easily. Dr. Lum’s advice for patients receiving lip enhancement is “don’t love them or hate them for at least two weeks.”

These side effects are temporary and should disappear within a few days or weeks in rare cases. Dr. Lum suggests you not touch or massage the area of filler treatment for at least six hours. One should also avoid strenuous physical activity on the day of your injections or whenever swelling persists.

Will I require additional Restylane injections?

One syringe is only 1 ml. This is only one-fifth of a teaspoon. Many patients will need multiple syringes for optimal correction.

We all age and lose volume to the skin and soft tissues regardless of what we do to take care of ourselves. With Restylane and other hyaluronic acid injectables, we can replace some of this volume loss. However, your body completely absorbs these fillers over time. Each patient is different, but Restylane might last 6-18 months or longer, depending on the amount injected and areas treated.

One must realize that the natural aging process always changes the face over time.  Degradable hyaluronic acid fillers are wonderful, because they degrade naturally as the face does. Yet, fillers slow down the appearance of aging. Used regularly, they stimulate your body to make more collagen.

Over time, the injector can always use more or less product as needed to adapt to these changes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be easily reversed if desired by the use of an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. Dr. Lum lets you know what to expect and how often to schedule follow-up injections.
