What is Juvederm®?
Juvederm products, such as Juvederm® Ultra, Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm® Voluma XC, and Juvederm® Volbella are injectable fillers made of hyaluronic acid — a naturally occurring substance your body produces.
There are currently five different types of Juvederm available in the United States. Hyaluronic acid keeps your skin hydrated and plump, and hyaluronic fillers are gel-like and soft. Examples of Juvederm products Dr. Lum uses at Lumier Medical include:
Juvederm® Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC
Juvederm® Ultra XC injectables are FDA-approved colorless gels containing hyaluronic acid. Your provider uses them to reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (especially nasolabial folds), and in other areas to provide structure and volume. Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC is slightly thicker than Juvederm® Ultra XC.
Juvederm Voluma® XC
Juvederm Voluma®XC is a very robust, FDA-approved filler that achieves so much! It not only adds instant volume to cheeks but also provides support to middle and lower portions of your face by creating lift.

Juvederm Volbella® XC
Juvederm Volbella® XC is a thinner FDA-approved filler that is often used for tiny creases and lines, such as those around the mouth. Depending on the application, Dr. Lum may choose this product when a lighter or more superficial filler technique is desirable.

What are the benefits of Juvederm fillers?

Juvederm is a product used in a nonsurgical injection procedure. Although most patients will have little to no downtime, bruising, and swelling can persist in some individuals for up to two weeks in rare cases. It is important that you let Dr. Lum know if you have any special upcoming events.
What should I expect during Juvederm injections?
During a pre-treatment consultation, Dr. Lum lets you know if Juvederm fillers or another aesthetic treatment is suitable for your needs.
Your provider thoroughly cleans the skin and may apply a topical numbing agent for your comfort. He strategically injects the Juvederm at specifically chosen depths to offer structure, scaffolding, support, and volume to your skin.
You’ll notice results from Juvederm injections right away, but it may take several days to see the final result.
What happens after Juvederm treatment?
After Juvederm injections, the most common side effects include:
- Bruising
- Redness
- Itching
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Firmness or lumps
- Skin irritation
These side effects are usually mild, temporary and should disappear within a few hours to days. Patients often go back to work right after their treatment. On rare occasions, it can take up to two weeks for swelling or bruising to subside, especially in the lip area.
You can apply ice to treated areas as needed to reduce mild discomfort or swelling. You should not massage or play with the recently treated areas for at least six hours. Dr. Lum may have you avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for one to two days. Otherwise, you can resume your normal daily activities right after the procedure.
Juvederm fillers can last up to 1 to 2 years, depending on where it was injected, how much was used, patient age, and condition of the area treated. These procedures are often done in combination with other aesthetic procedures to help address age-related changes that occur over time.
