What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL®) Skin Rejuvenation?

Most of us would like to look younger or maintain our youthful looks. An ideal way to improve the look, texture, and tone of your skin would be to use a process known as photofacial rejuvenation. Laser physics and pulsed light technology (sometimes referred to as Intense Pulsed Light or IPL ™) has led to the RejuveLux ™ process—a form of photofacial rejuvenation–which can help remove skin imperfections.

The RejuveLux process uses pulses of concentrated light to treat freckles, sun spots (solar lentigines), age spots, light brown or darker hair, broken capillaries and browning of the skin. This process also stimulates the skin to make its own natural collagen, which can improve the tone and texture of the skin, and minimize superficial fine lines.

Pigmented Lesions – (sunspots, age spots, liver spots) – often occur in response to sun-induced skin injury. These appear as dark brown circles and are given many different names by the lay public, but are medically known as solar lentigines (plural for lentigo).

Diffuse browning of the skin, known as Actinic Bronzing, can also occur. Although brown spots are most frequently benign, it is important to have an accurate diagnosis by a physician prior to treatment, since undiagnosed skin cancer can delay proper medical care.

Vascular lesions – tiny superficial blue, purple or red veins under the skin’s surface often referred to by many as broken capillaries can be treated. Some common entities treated with this technology include Rosacea (facial inflammation) and Spider Veins (tiny vessels visible near the surface of the face).

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Before your IPL treatment, Dr. Lum recommends the following:

  • Discontinue sun tanning, the use of sun-tanning beds, and self-tanning creams four weeks before and throughout the treatment course. This will reduce the chance of skin color changes and the development of newer lesions.
  • Use a sunblock with SPF-30 or higher on all exposed treatment areas. Use liberally and re-apply throughout the day.
  • Wear protective, light-occluding hats and clothing to help diminish sun-exposure to areas to be treated.
  • Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams such as Retin-A and other skin exfoliating products 2 weeks prior to treatment.

Follow all instructions to achieve and maintain the beautiful skin you desire. When you’re ready to improve the surface appearance of your skin, call Lumier Medical today or book an appointment online.
