Restylane® and Restylane® Lyft

Restylane Lyft

What is Restylane®?

RestylaneRestylane®, a product of Galderma, was the first non-animal derived hyaluronic acid injectable gel FDA-approved in the United States in 2003. It was introduced by Q-Med in Sweden in 1996. Restylane® is a dermal filler that replaces lost volume to help restore youthful contours. It is injected into facial tissue to smooth out moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It can be used for the laugh lines between the nose and corners of the mouth, for the marionette lines, cheeks, tear trough lines, under the chin, lips, nose, ears, and to elevate the outside edges of the brows. The Restylane® family of products has been used in more than 10 million treatments in more than 65 countries worldwide.

The science behind Restylane® is hyaluronic acid, which is present in youthful skin, but recedes as we age. Restylane® gel uses stabilized hyaluronic acid, specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid. It can smooth out signs of aging and bring out the best of your own features.

Since hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, Restylane® can be used in many skin areas. Although it had been initially approved with the stated longevity of 6 months in the nasolabial folds (laugh lines), a recent study has shown it can last up to 18 months when following the Restylane® Regimen1.
1The Restylane® is a treatment plan that involves an initial treatment using full correction and a follow-up treatment at 4.5 or 9 months after the initial treatment.

What is Restylane® Lyft?

Restylane LyftRestylane® Lyft is the other member of the Restylane® collection of products available in the United States. Like Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane® Lyft is made of the same exact ingredients as Restylane®, but what makes Restylane® Lyft different is the average particle size and depth of injection. On average, the particles of Restylane® Lyft are larger than those in Restylane®. This makes Restylane® Lyft a robust filler and a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin.

Either Restylane® or Restylane® Lyft can be used to help restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Both products are now available with Lidocaine, an anesthetic. Each product contains about 21 mg/ml of hylauronic acid.

The choice of which filler to select can be confusing to the lay person. Many physicians and patients have their subjective favorites. Some stick with only one product, which is okay for many situations. At Lumier Medical, we have many filler products to choose from, each with a unique set of properties. Substance, rheology (product flow), plunger pressure to extrude product, viscosity, texture, particle size, water-retaining ability (hydrophilic property), injection depth, longevity, color, etc., are considered based on whom and what is being injected. The more robust fillers should generally not be injected in the lips or tear troughs. The less hydrophilic ones would be more appropriate near the eyelids when unwanted swelling is a concern. Having a palette of choices gives the injector a variety of tools to more artistically sculpt soft tissue. We aim to utilize fillers to their best advantages. Ultimately, the decision of which filler to use is between you and the doctor. We help you understand and decide what is best for you.
