Juvéderm® Ultra XC / Plus XC
JUVÉDERM® Ultra injectable gel is a product of Allergan, the makers of BOTOX and Latisse. JUVÉDERM® Ultra and Ultra Plus are colorless gels that are composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA), and were approved by the FDA in June 2006. They are indicated for injection into the mid-to-deep dermis for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (such as nasolabial folds). While other HA fillers on the market have a more granular consistency, JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first smooth-consistency HA gel due to a manufacturing process called HYLACROSS technology.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin and other parts of the body. It helps deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and acts as a cushioning agent. Hyaluronic acid can hold 1000 times its own weight in water. It’s presence in skin has been found to maintain or even accelerate the forming of new collagen.
For correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds, JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is FDA approved to last up to 1 year. Results certainly can vary depending on how much product is injected, the person and area injected. JUVÉDERM® can also be used to treat other areas of the face such as the lips, the vertical lip lines, marionette lines, oral commissures, chin wrinkles, prejowl sulcus, the ears, nose, and in some cases, and the lines on the forehead. With great care and expert technique it can also be used between the brows with or without botulinum toxin A, depending on the depth, cause, and “stretch-ability” of those wrinkle lines.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus have about 24 mg/ml of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid in its native state would not last very long in the skin following implantation. Therefore, a portion of this product is treated by a process known as stabilization. With stabilization, polymer chains of HA are cross-linked to increase tissue residency time. The percentage of cross-linking is 6% for JUVÉDERM® Ultra and 8% for JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus. Of these two choices, JUVÉDERM® Ultra-Plus is the more robust filler that is injected slightly deeper into the skin with a tiny, but slightly wider needle. JUVÉDERM® Ultra is a slightly finer product. Both products are now available from Allergan with Xylocaine. They are labeled JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC.
The choice of which filler to select can be confusing to the lay person. Many physicians and patients have their subjective favorites. Some stick with only one product, which is okay for many situations. At Lumier Medical, we have many filler products to choose from, each with a unique set of properties. These properties* are considered in light of whom and what area is to be injected. The more robust fillers should generally not be injected in the lips or tear troughs. The less hydrophilic ones would be more appropriate near the eyelids when unwanted swelling is a concern. A palette of choices gives us a variety of tools to more artistically sculpt soft tissue. We aim to utilize fillers to their best advantages. Ultimately, the decision of which filler to use is between you and the doctor. We help you understand and decide what is best for you.
*Properties include, but are not limited to substance, rheology (product flow), plunger pressure to extrude product, viscosity, texture, particle size, water-retaining ability (hydrophilic property), injection depth, longevity, and color.
