Bellafill is the New Kid on the Block for Acne Scar Treatment
- Posted on: May 15 2015
Persistent acne scarring is a difficult skin care issue to fully treat, especially with creams and other topical applications. But chemical peels, laser treatments, and dermal fillers are effective choices in addressing acne scars. Recently, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved Bellafill, an injectable filler, for treating mild to moderate cases of acne scarring in patients over the age of 21.
Bellafill is inherently different than Restylane (a hyaluronic acid filler that has been used to treat acne scarring) because it is primarily made of collagen and non-absorbable polymethylmethacrylate beads (PMMA microspheres). Bellafill treats acne scarring in two ways — the collagen is absorbed to fill in the scars while the PMMA microspheres remain to provide long-term support to the surrounding skin structures. Clinical studies have shown that one or two injections of Bellafill provides desired outcomes and can last up to 12 months.
The newly approved acne scar filler is not a newcomer in the injectables scene. In fact, it was first approved by the FDA in 2006 to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and has been used off-label for lip enhancement and acne scarring.
The Lumier Medical team is excited to recommend Bellafill to patients who have tried many products and cosmetic options for smoothing out acne scars. Find out more about Bellafill today by calling us at 310.375.9595.
