to minimize the appearance of lines below baggy eyes. What is Restylane® ?
Restylane®, a product of Medicis Aesthetics, was the first non-animal derived hyaluronic acid injectable gel FDA-approved in the United States in 2003. It was introduced by Q-Med in Sweden in 1996. Restylane® is a dermal filler that replaces lost volume to help restore youthful contours. It is injected into facial tissue to smooth out moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It can be used for the laugh lines between the nose and corners of the mouth, for the marionette lines, cheeks, tear trough lines, under the chin, lips, nose, ears, and to elevate the outside edges of the brows. The Restylane® family of products has been used in more than 10 million treatments in more than 65 countries worldwide.
The science behind Restylane® is hyaluronic acid, which is present in youthful skin, but recedes as we age. Restylane® gel uses stabilized hyaluronic acid, specifically formulated to act like your body’s own hyaluronic acid. It can smooth out signs of aging and bring out the best of your own features.
Since hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, Restylane® can be used in many skin areas. Although it had been initially approved with the stated longevity of 6 months in the nasolabial folds (laugh lines), a recent study has shown it can last up to 18 months when following the Restylane® Regimen.1
What is Perlane® ?
Perlane® is the other member of the Restylane® collection of products available in the United States. Like Restylane®, Perlane® restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Perlane® is made of the same exact ingredients as Restylane®, but what makes Perlane® different is the average particle size and depth of injection. On average, the particles of Perlane® are larger than those in Restylane®. This makes Perlane® a robust filler and a good choice for wrinkles that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin.
Either Restylane® or Perlane® can be used to help restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds Both products are now available with Lidocaine, an anesthetic. Each product contains about 21 mg/ml of hylauronic acid.
1The Restylane® Regimen is a treatment plan that involves an initial treatment using full correction and a follow-up treatment at 4.5 or 9 months after the initial treatment.
